Laskar Pelangi (English: The Rainbow Troops) is an inspiring story about 10 students and their teachers in an effort to go to school at SD Muhammadiyah Gantong. After rewatching this movie, there are many important messages and moral values that we need to pay more attention to.
Everyone Has A Right To Education… But Not Everyone Can Do So.
Lintang, the star pupil and genius of SD Muhammadiyah, sadly was unable to finish his elementary school because of the unforeseen death of his fisherman father, whom he had to replace as the breadwinner of his family, teachers such as Ibu Mus, had to fight the stigma surrounding children of coolies by advocating the benefit of pursuing an education. As a way to break the cycle of poverty within their families, despite wishing that everyone could go to school, there are many circumstances that force children to drop out.
Privilege Check!
There are many parallels between SD Muhammadiyah Gantong and SD PN Timah to emphasize the gap in educational facilities. Which ranges from poor infrastructure that leads to flooding, limited educational equipment , and the lack of teaching staff. However, despite all these challenges the students of Muhammadiyah, particularly Lintang never lost hope and his motivation to study. Also, Mahar and the Laskar Pelangi children were able to win the annual Independence Day Carnival by utilising leaves as costumes and face painting. Reminding us all to take a step back and be grateful for all the facilities accessible to us in order to have an optimal learning experience.
“Intelligence is not merely determined from grades...but from the heart.” - Mr Harfan, Principal of SD Muhammadiyah
This inspiring quote was given by Pak Harfan to remind us that high intelligence is nothing without kindness and good attitude. He often draws from religious and moral lessons to teach the Laskar Pelangi kids about patience, perseverance and humility. Ultimately, encouraging us to achieve a balance of both academic intelligence and a kind heart.
Always have a Hand to Hand Spirit
This movie is the epitome of always being a helping hand for others during tough times. From Pak Zul providing donations for Muhammadiyah, Flo giving away her books so that the Laskar Pelangi kids can read them, and Pak Mahmud standing up for Lintang when Lintang gets accused of cheating. Inspiring us to help out others during difficult times because you never know how much an act of kindness can have an impact on their lives.
